Reconstructive surgery for plastic surgery patients in general involves surgical procedures to restore function, form or appearance. This includes treatment of deformities or alterations in appearance from birth defects, trauma, burns, cancer, infection or prior surgery. These procedures place greater emphasis on restoration of protective skin, fat or muscle for closure of wounds over aesthetic appearance. Board certified plastic surgeons treat complex wounds, injuries and deformities on all parts of the body. They often utilize movement of local or distant skin, fat, or muscle to assist with reconstruction. This may include the use of grafts, flaps, bone grafts, tissue expanders, lasers, or implants. This site is not intended to review reconstructive surgery but does provide a few examples of plastic surgery applications in reconstructive surgery of craniofacial, hand, truncal, and lower extremity injuries. Plastic Surgery for Skin Cancer

The incidence of skin cancers such as melanoma has been on the rise. This is despite increased awareness of the damage caused by excessive sun exposure without proper protectant. Most clinicians recommend avoidance of prolong sun exposure or tanning, use of sun block of SPF 30 or higher, and regular exams by a dermatologist for individuals at higher risk for skin cancer based on skin type or history. Most plastic surgeons leave the diagnosis and surveillance of skin cancers to dermatologists. Plastic surgeons are often requested to remove lesions once the diagnosis has been made. Follow up after surgical excision is then performed by both the plastic surgeon and dermatologist.

Scar Revision

Unfavorable post-traumatic or surgical scars are frequent causes for plastic surgical consultation. Unfortunately, there is no way to eliminate scars. Plastic surgical techniques may, however, be effective in making scars less noticeable. Such techniques are aimed at improving the appearance of scars by decreasing thickness or width. In addition, by changing directions of scars light reflection can be altered to assist with camouflage. Most scars take 12 to 18 months to mature. Therefore, with some exceptions, scar revisions are usually postponed for at least one year from the time of injury in order to decrease the chance of undergoing surgery prematurely or unnecessarily.

Lipoma is a very common benign tumor composed of fat cells. It usually presents as a slowly growing painless, mobile mass under the skin. The diagnosis is usually made by history and clinical exam but in some cases requires an MRI for confirmation. Patients should consult their physicians for diagnosis. Once the diagnosis of a benign lipoma is made, patients may choose to have the mass removed. Lipomas may be removed by open surgical excision or by suction lipectomy. The advantage of liposuction of a benign mass is that incisions are minimum and recovery is rapid.
